Privacy

The identities of the users of this site are private and cannot ever be revealed to anyone or any agency. When you visit this site, we do not collect any personal information about you without your explicit consent, and therefore have no possibility of reporting your information to anyone without your knowledge.

Some early users of the site, however, gave basic demographic information about themselves, and it is possible to make some general statements about the users of the site in that early period without posing a threat to the privacy of any individual user.

Basic Demographic Information

We no longer ask for demographic information from the people who register to be notified when the site changes. Before February 2001 we used to invite those of you who registered to provide some basic information about your location, age, gender, occupation, and level of education. None of this information was required, though.

Of the 105 people who registered before February 10, 2001, those who did provided the requested information were from 25 different countries. While the largest number was from the United States of America, as I am, we represented bearly more than one fourth of those registered, and we lived in 20 different states. Thirty eight (36.2%) of those registered held graduate degrees, but others were still in elementary or middle school. Most users of the site were male, but roughly 20% were female. Twenty one (21) were college or university faculty, while many others were students. Some were in managerial careers, others in marketing. Some were in technical or engineering fields, while others were journalists. Ages ranged from under 18 to over 60. Roughly 20% were between the ages of 30 and 39, while almost as many were over 50. Another 20% were between 18 and 29 years old.

We represented a very broad range of ages, occupations, and cultures and there is no reason to think that has changed. The Greek Language and Linguistics Gateway was and continues to be a truly diverse international community.
