Small cosmetic changes are made to this site on an ongoing basis. A representative sample of more major changes is included here in order to illustrate the development of the Gateway. Minor changes and corrections are not discussed here. Highlights of a Few Changes so far in 2005In the week of September 1923, we made two important changes to the site. First, we added feedback forms on four pages to enable you to communicate directly with our office. Feeback forms were added on the following pages:
Second, the appearance of the site improved significantly. This change was accomplished by moving away from basic HTML based formatting to extensive use of Cascading Style Sheets. As always, though, Greek-Language.com is built and maintained by editing the sorce code directly using a text/programming editor. On Thursday, September 13, 2005 Greek-Language.com launched its bookstore. The store offers books on Pre-classical, Classical, Hellenistic, and Modern Greek as well as books on Linguistics more generally. In August of 2005 Greek-Language.com moved to a new, more powerful server in order to be able to expand our services. Highlights of a Few Changes in 2004The Sites of Related Interest page was redesigned on June 1, 2004 to make it more useful. A brief annotation was added to each entry indicating how it is related to the content of this site. On May 20, 2004 access to Gary Stringer's article, " New Testament Greek: Towards a Two-level Description" was added to the Research page. A link to the abstract for Andrew Katona's dissertation, " Opening of the Voiced Stops /b d g/ in Greek" was also added, and the entry for Philip Graber's dissertation was updated. On February 15, the Lexical Aids page was reformated to make the resources listed there easier to distinguish. A link was also added for Souter's 1917 Pocket Lexicon to the Greek New Testament on the Textkit site. On February 14, the Greek Language and Linguistics Gateway was optimized for Safari, Apple's native browser for OS X. From February 10, 1999 to February 10, 2004 over 1,000,000 pages from the Greek Language and Linguistic Gateway were viewed on nearly half a million unique visits to the site. In February, 2004 links to the American Association of Applied Linguistics, the Association of Computational Linguistics, and the International Phonetic Association were added to the Sites of Related Interest page. In early January, 2004 Classical Greek pronunciation was added to the Alphabet page. Highlights from 2003In December, 2003 the Epigraphy page was reorganized to make it easier to locate images of inscriptions published on the web. Websites of prominent epigraphical organizations were separated from the actual pages that display images. Several books on epigraphy were also added to the page. At the beginning of February, 2003 the color scheme for the entire site was revised. The dominant color changed from to In January 2003 a revision of the Manuscripts Page began. The page was updated to include a brief discussion of each site accesible from there. This change made the Manuscripts Page clearer, more consistent, and easier to use. The introduction of an animated menu system began in December of 2002 and continued well into January 2003. It is now possible to access any page within the site from any other page on the Gateway. Take a look at the menu to your left. As you scroll down the page it will follow you. Some of the items in the list open submenus on related topics. These are marked by small black "arrowheads." Thank you, Andy Woolley, for making the source code to power the menus freely available to the public! NOTE: This floating menu system was removed from the site later because of the slow performance it produced for some older browsers. Highlights from 2002On September 27, 2002 the Linear B page made its debut. Links from the History page and the Alphabet page made it easy to find from other relevant locations on the Gateway. The link to Omniglot.com's discussion of Linear B which was formerly on the history page was moved to the new Linear B page. On September 9, 2002 Johannes Niehoff-Panagiotidis' book, Koine und Diglossie, and Leo Wetzels' article, "Phonological timing in ancient Greek" gained places in the Comprehensive Bibliography of Hellenistic Greek Linguistics. These books both make significant contributions to the application of linguistic theory to Ancient Greek. On September 5, 2002 I added several items to the Bibliographies page, including the ability to perform a simple boolean search of the Library of Congress catalogue using the terms "Linguistics" and "Greek." I also added an entry for Io Manolessou's article, "The Evolution of the Demonstrative System in Greek" to the Comprehensive Bibliography of Hellenistic Greek Linguistics. On September 5, 2002 the Biblical Language Standards email list was added to the Discussion Lists page. In the week or so leading up to August 23, 2002 I added to the Alphabet page a number of resources to help with pronunciation and writing. These include improved Erasmian pronunciation examples and excellent writing examples from the Appalacian College Association's tutoring page, examples of Classical pronunciation from the Commission for Ancient Literature and Latin Tradition, and Carl Conrad's discussion of Ancient Greek pronunciation. Also on the History page I added a link to omniglot.com's discussion of Linear B. This link was subsequently moved to the new Linear B page added on September 27, 2002 here at greek-language.com On the Lexical Aids page I added a link to S. C. Woodhouse's Englist-Greek Dictionary: A Vocabulary of the Attic Language. On the Grammars page I added a link to North and Hillard's Greek Prose Composition and the key to that same grammar. On March 9, 2002 I added a simple Epigraphy page which provides links to a number of internet sites with helpful information on Greek epigraphy (inscriptions and their interpretation). On February 21, 2002 I added a survey system to enable users of the site to share information relevant to the site. This will also help me to make better judgments about the kinds of upgrades needed. To see the results of the first survey, click here . Highlights from 2001On March 3, 2001 I overhauled this "What's New" page. While numerous additions to the Gateway had been made in the early part of 2001 and in late 2000, few of these were noted here. I have now added the missing information. On February 10, 2001 I added a page explaining the privacy policies governing the Greek Language and Linguistics Gateway and providing a brief overview of the diversity of users of the site. You can view this page at http://www.greek-language.com/who/. On February 2, 2001, after response to the earlier addition of the Classical Atlas Project to the home page of the Greek Language and Linguistics Gateway had been very good, I also added a link to the Perseus Atlas. You can find both of these resources in a section entitled "Atlases Related to Ancient Greek" just below the list of "Sites of Related Interest" on the main page. A few days before January 31, 2001, I added links to the American Philological Association's home page and the Classical Atlas Project at UNC from the main page of the Greek Language and Linguistics Gateway. The Classical Atlas Project pushes the limits of the criteria for inclusion on the Gateway, but it is a useful resource for anyone studying Ancient Greek language and culture. I hope you find it useful. On January 4, 2001 I added automated searches of Amazon.com on the following topics from the main page of the Greek Language and Linguistics Gateway: Greek Language and Linguistics You can execute these searches by clicking on the links above or by clicking on one of the links in the list below "Buy Books on Greek and Linguistics" near the bottom of the home page. On January 2, 2001 I replaced the old search capability with one from FreeFind. The new search box works much better and has a number of added features, such as generating a site map which can be displayed in outline, table, or list format. Highlights from 2000On November 22-23, 2000 I added a page of information on Peter Lang Publishing's series, Studies in Biblical Greek and a link to Westcott and Hort's Greek New Testament on Perseus. On October 26, 2000 I updated the Greek Manuscripts Gateway page. Timothy Seid's "Interpreting Ancient Manuscripts" pages, which had been unavailable for some time were available again, and greatly enhanced. I also reactivated links to P66, P75, Codex Vaticanus, Codex Sinaiticus, and Codex Bezae and added a link to an image of Codex Alexandrinus. These resources from Timothy Seid's site have once again disappeared from the web. If they become available again in the future I will make them available through the Gateway. I also added a link to the manuscript images available at Princeton University. These remain available. On September 9, 2000 I added a page giving an extremely brief introduction to the history of the Greek language. I hope to expand this treatment of the history by adding pages dealing with changes in phonology, vocabulary, and syntax over time. If you would like to see any of these further advances take place, send me a note to tell me what you would like to see first. On August 10, 2000 I added a page showing the Greek Alphabet. On June 26, 2000 I fixed a problem with the site search engine. For several weeks the search engine had failed to work properly, but I was finally able to isolate the problem and repair it. On February 8, 2000 I added search capability to the Greek Language and Linguistics Gateway. From this date on the sight has been searchable from the main page. This first search engine also allowed searches of the entire www. It was later replaced by a better designed search tool. Highlights from 1999On October 23, 1999 I added several items to the Comprehensive Bibliography of Hellenistic Greek Linguistics. On April 28, 1999 I updated several entries in the Comprehensive Bibliography of Hellenistic Greek Linguistics and added an entry for A.M. Devine and Laurence D. Stephens, The Prosody of Greek Speech. Many more items are now available for purchase directly from the bibliography. I also corrected some faulty links from the page that you are now reading. From February 1 to March 8, 1999 I moved the Greek Language and Linguistics Gateway from its original home on my personal web page ( http://home.earthlink.net/~mwpalmer/) to its new permanent home ( http://www.greek-language.com). Highlights from 1998On December 30, 1998 I corrected some problems on the Discussion Lists page so that the images would display correctly on all browsers. On November 19, 1998 the following features were added:
