Essay on Paul's Experience of the Risen Christ


On the second exam you will be required to write an essay discussing Paul's experience of the risen Christ. Your essay must reflect a clear knowledge of
  • the relevant passages from Paul's own letters,
  • the passages in Acts that interpret this experience,
  • pages 36-50 of the book by Calvin Roetzel, and
  • pages 7-23 of the book by Krister Stendahl.
While it is not necessary for you to agree with either Roetzel's or Stendahl's conclusions, it is necessary for you to demonstrate that you have read what they say and know where to find the relevant evidence.
 As you prepare to write this essay, you may find it helpful to also consult pages 174-181 of Roetzel's book. While these pages have not been assigned yet, Roetzel discusses some of the history of how the new understanding of Paul came about.
